Red Rock Wilderness Overlook

This small park offers some historic buildings, a few hiking trails, and an overlook to appreciate the Potomac River. As I arrived, I saw an old well house, carriage house, and a granary along the parking lot.

Each building in the Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Park had a marker with information about it’s use. An Ice House was also tucked away near by on the other side of the entrance.

The park offered many hiking trails through the Leesburg woods in Louden County, Virginia. An area with a bench was found about a half mile in overlooking the Potomac. It’s a bit secluded and has a fence along the edge, along with eight love locks.

The path was very prominent at first, but later became fairly light. Trail markers are found along the way to guide you along. You’ll also find many people walking along the trails with dogs, families, or going at it alone.

An unmarked trail leads down to a muddy beach where you can walk along the Potomac river. It appeared that we came at a dead end when we found ourselves standing below a wall of boulders. A steep path can be found around them.

My favorite parts were enjoying the wind in the trees, listening to the river, hearing some tree creek, and enjoying the view with blue cloudy sky’s. We didn’t hear any wildlife such as birds, which was a bit eerie, but it could be that the weather is still chilly for the birds to come back.

The park doesn’t offer much in the way of amenities. No bathrooms or trash cans, but you will find a shaded picnic table by the well house and a map of the park at one of the trail heads.
